3 Marketing Misconceptions

GPC-3-marketing-Misconceptions
Are you missing out because of these common marketing misconceptions? As we work with businesses and suggest ideas for their marketing strategy there are several misconceptions that are often raised with us. These are the top 3 and our usual response.   GDPR means you cannot send an email newsletter.   This is the response we ALWAYS get when we suggest an email newsletter. Yes, the business is absolutely right to be concerned about GDPR but there are ways of compiling an email list that is GDPR compliant. How you do it and if you add contacts depends on your business and who you are sending your newsletter to. You need to be really vigilant and careful if your database comprises personal email addresses. We help businesses build GDPR compliant databases and write and send email newsletters for them. We get higher than average open rates. These also generate leads...

How Not To Use Facebook Groups

GPC-How-not-to-use-Facebook-groups
Facebook groups are a great way to get business, and we include using them in our social media strategies. But could you potentially harm your business by the way you use them? Last week I spotted a post asking for restaurant recommendations in a Facebook group – nothing unusual there of course. There were plenty of comments recommending different places but inevitably someone commented advising people to avoid one of the recommendations. Understandably the restaurant owner challenged the comment, with a standard sorry you were disappointed reply. And then the argument started - with the restaurant owner clearly up against a “keyboard warrior” with an agenda. One I suspect was spotted by other posters later in the thread. I must admit to finding it quite entertaining but was left worrying about the damage the restaurant owner had inadvertently caused her business by her response. Her replies became more aggressive as...

Keep it Simple Stupid. How Keeping your Marketing Simple Yields Results

GPC-Simple-marketing-and-Social-Media-for-great-results
Why we take being told our marketing and social media advice is simple as a compliment. The lock down has been difficult for all of us, so we wanted to help others where we could. In our case this has been to offer advice about marketing during these strange times and beyond. While a lot of focus has been on social media, we have provided ideas for other marketing as well. The response we get is “It’s simple really, isn’t it” or “It’s just common sense” some people then go on to say they didn’t mean to offend us. We aren’t. Those responses indicate to us that we have succeeded. Why? It means that the person we’ve helped has understood us. By giving someone simple easy to implement ideas, they are more likely to use them and continue to use them   Our aim for all businesses we work with...

Social Media's Time To Shine

GPC-Social-Medias-chance-to-shine
As we all battle with the effects of Coronavirus, social media has been given a chance to shine. So often it is the downside of social media that gets focussed on, but the last few days have shown it can be a force for good too. All over the country communities are forming Facebook and Whatsapp groups to coordinate efforts to help people self-isolating with or from the virus or helping the vulnerable. It is a great way for people to communicate to a number of people at the same time. It is also social media’s time to shine moment for businesses. Not only does it provide a quick and immediate way of communicating with customers and potential customers, but it is also a way of marketing your business for little money at a time when money is tight. Having said that you may need to make changes to your...

Small Steps to Start Your Marketing Journey

GPC-Blog-Small-Steps-to-start-your-marketing-journey
“A journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step”   For some reason that quote popped into my mind recently. The fashion for sharing quotes on social media seems to have died down, but of all the many quotes I’ve read over the last few years that one resonated with me. Others have left me raising my eyebrows at their sheer banality. It is true isn’t it, that to succeed in anything you have to take that first, often small step. A marketing campaign is no different. Working with clients the first thing we do is identify small steps that they can take to start seeing results. It could be updating a Google my Business listing or rewording social media profiles. Often marketing is in place but not being utilised as well as it can be. Social media is a good example . Often posts are sporadic and...

5 Tips To Help You Deal With A Negative Review

GPC-5-Tips-to-help-you-deal-with-a--negative-review
We recently received a bad review – not for GPC Marketing, but for our holiday rental in Spain. We were upset, it isn’t nice to have someone rubbish your property or business but in this instance it was unjustified. All our other reviews are 4 or 5 stars but this one was only 1 star. Why? Because we withheld the guest’s deposit due the state he and his family left the property in and the damage he caused. The review was left on our HomeAway listing. Reviews left on third-party sites such as this, Trip Advisor or Google are always more valuable but when something goes wrong it can be difficult to get the review removed or nigh on impossible. If you have been successful in getting a malicious review removed do let us know either in the comments or by sending us an email at This email address is being protected from spambots. Marketing is more than Facebook and Instagram

GPC-Blog-Why-you-need-more-than-facebook-and-Instagram-to-market-your-business
What would you do if Facebook or Instagram ceased to exist? Last Wednesday I logged into Facebook to see what was going on. I had a post that I needed to reply to, so I wrote the reply to find that nothing happened. I tried again – still nothing. I assumed it was my wi fi so I turned my phone off and on again – still nothing. As my reply was important, I logged onto Facebook on my desktop and that was when I caught sight of a news article saying that Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp had gone down. Fortunately, I hadn’t any scheduled posts waiting to be sent or ads running. It wouldn’t have been the end of the world if I had – just frustrating. In the end the sites were down for 10 hours but it was a wakeup call to many users that focussing...

Essential Tips for Effective Email Newsletters

GPC-Essential-Tips-for-Effective-Email-Newsletters
One of the easiest and most cost-effective ways a small business can market themselves is by sending regular email newsletters. They are so effective they are part of marketing strategy for most large businesses, especially those selling to consumers. Despite all the scare stories about the introduction of GDPR, email news letters are still an essential part of any marketing strategy that we create. Having said that GDPR hasn’t affected email newsletters it made people more aware of the law. Some of the rules were in place before the introduction of GDPR, they have just been more widely publicised. It had the additional benefit of most businesses reviewing their databases.   Regular review of your database and newsletter statistics will give you a good idea of who is reading your newsletters . Having a group of customers and potential customers who regularly engage with you, if only by opening...

How To Use Facebook Effectively In 2019

How-to-use-Facebook-Effectively
A new year is a time to take stock and make predictions based on the year that preceded it. For 2019 this is easier than normal. One trend in social media marketing, especially Facebook, is already apparent and is the result of events in 2018. When GDPR came into force in May 2018 it was generally assumed that it would have a negative effect on email newsletters. In fact, email newsletters continue to flourish and are a great way to market your business. If you work within the rules and allow people to unsubscribe or subscribe themselves, you are contacting people more likely to buy from you. The introduction did have an unexpected side effect – in our view has it has made people much more aware of the amount of their personal data accessible and held about them. Many online businesses hold vast amounts of data on all...

Getting good SEO is the aim for all websites and one way to do this is to add regular new content in the form of a blog. This is great in theory but in practice coming up with new content for your blog can be a challenge. Before you start writing a blog you should ask yourself these questions;   How often can I commit to producing a new blog? What are my potential customers likely to be looking for?   Once you have the answers to these questions, set up a spreadsheet, add the dates you want to publish the blog and start to write some of your content ideas down. You have created a content calendar. Earlier this year we launched our new...

Don't Discount an Offer - How to Gain and Keep a Customer

GPC-Blog-Dont-Discount-an-Offer
A couple of months ago I saw a dress I really liked. It is a favourite brand of mine and I often look out for their new ranges. I also know that soon after the new stock arrives it is reduced by 20%. So, I waited for an email to arrive to tell me the range was on offer and then ordered it feeling pleased with myself for grabbing a bargain. Of course, the reduction had been factored into the original price, so you could argue that had I bought it when I first saw it, I would have paid too much.   Offers are everywhere. From regular reductions, restaurant discounts and voucher apps, it is easy to believe that you are getting great bargains.   But is this a good thing? The right offer can be a really good way to get visitors to try your product or...

3 reasons why “Buy Local” applies to your Marketing advice

GPC-Buy-Local-Marketing
When you are urged to “Buy Local” Do you think only of retailers or do you source your business advice locally too? Here are 3 reasons why you should.   We have been advising businesses how to use social media for a long time now, and what we advise is based on both our experience and the current trends in social media. Most of all we advise a bespoke strategy designed for each individual business.   Over the years we have come across all sorts of packages designed to make social media easy for a business. While having a presence on social media is good, the best campaigns are those that reflect a business, the owners and possibly employees, its services or products and its beliefs and values.   Many businesses offer a posting service for social media, especially Twitter. Many of these campaigns are designed for specific sectors...

Are You In The Paper? - Press Coverage is an Easy Win

GPC-Are-you-in-the-paper-press-coverage-is-an-easy-win
Marketing is all about getting your business noticed to boost sales. Our marketing plans all start with suggestions of easy wins. These are quick and simple things to implement but get results. One of these easy wins is to get some press coverage for your business . It can be a really good way to gain exposure and is something we have used to good effect with some of our customers. By press coverage we are not talking about full page articles in a National newspaper or magazine – not to start with anyway. We are talking about your local newspaper, print or online or one of the many local magazines or community websites that have appeared in the last 10 years or so. What should you promote and how should you get your story published? Think about what would make a good story about your business, maybe you don’t...

Social Media - Is it all in the timing

GPC-Social-Media---Is-it-all-in-the-timing
One of the biggest challenges of social media marketing is getting your posts noticed. Any post you write is up against the algorithms used by all the platforms as well as the sheer amount of posts that are churned out every minute of the day. All hope isn’t lost, and we have several tips that we employ to help get the most exposure for our posts. Create good engaging posts A post that engages people will gain traction. The more people that like or comment on your Facebook post or Retweet your tweet will mean that your post will be seen by more people. In our experience these posts are rarely promotional ones. The most liked posts tend to be personal, news about someone in the business or a success all do well. It seems people can relate to posts like these. Post at the optimum time Posting at...

How Not To Ask For A Review

GPC-How-not-to-ask-for-a-review
Last week I upgraded my mobile phone. We have a policy of not naming other businesses, but on this occasion, you can probably work it out The process was fairly painless, I knew what I wanted and the member of staff who served me was good and knew her stuff. The following morning, I received a text to my new phone asking me to answer 2 feedback questions “at my normal network charge” Hmm! Asking for a review is good practice and one of our standard marketing easy wins BUT you must make it easy for people to give you one. In complete contrast to businesses that request a review from me and offer to put my name in a prize draw, responding to the text not only had nothing in it for me, but would cost me money to respond. Now you can argue that a certain amount...

Empty Shops and Easy Wins

GPC-Empty-Shops-and-Easy-Wins
So, Loch Fyne is the latest casualty in Henley-on-Thames. That area of Marketplace in particular is now resembling a ghost town where a whole line of units are standing empty. They all closed for lots of reasons and two of the businesses are successful in their other locations. In a wealthy town like Henley it seems weird that there are so many empty units. With the uncertainty of the development through the alleyway to Waitrose continuing Henley has an area that looks really depressed. Obviously, there are secular trends away from shopping in shops to shopping online. This is putting massive pressure on all retailers, especially the independents. Also the casual dining sector has been suffering over the last 12 months as diners look for value for money and unique experiences. Taking in to account all of the secular and cyclical issues Henley does seem to have its own problems...
